Frequently Asked Questions

Below we have compiled a short list of frequently asked questions for anyone interested in joining the band, as well as for some of those already in the band!

General Questions

Q. I'm keen to join the band - what should I do next?

If you are an experienced player then you should contact the pipe major to discuss joining and arrange a suitable date to attend a practice and meet the band.  All new members are requested to complete a members application (as found below).

EKPB Members Application

If you are interested in tuition then please contact our Head of Tuition to ensure that we have tuition spaces currently available.  Please note that due to tutor availability we may have to take a note of your details and contact you when the next suitable tuition space arises.  For anyone without any equipment we have a limited number of practice chanters and sticks and practice pads that we can issue you with on loan prior to purchasing your own equipment.  All students are required to complete a members application (as found above)

Q. Does it cost me anything as a member?

As a completely self-funded organisation subscription and tuition fees are an integral part of keeping the band performing throughout the year.  All playing members are required to pay monthly subscriptions and all tuition students are required to pay a monthly tuition fee.  As an alternative to paying monthly, band members may optionally pay an annual subscription fee at an overall reduced rate.

All fees collected go towards paying for uniform and equipment, off-setting travel costs, hire of practice venues as well as the purchase of consumable items such as chanter reeds and drum skins.

Q. Are all your tutors suitably disclosure checked?

East Kilbride Pipe Band aims to ensure that children are protected and kept safe from harm whilst they are with members within our organisation.  In order to achieve this we will ensure that all of our tutors are carefully selected, screened, trained and supervised.  For further information please refer to our Disclosure Scotland policies as detailed below.

Disclosure Scotland - Child Protection Policy

Disclosure Scotland - Disclosure Data Policy

Disclosure Scotland - Ex-Offender Policy

Q. I notice you run contest buses - what are the costs?

We only run contest buses where and when it makes sense - for local engagements and contests we simply car share.  Contest buses are clearly marked in the band calendar with the bus icon () and we encourage all members, as well as friends and family to use these buses.  When traveling by bus, band members are charged a flat fare of £5 (£2 for children) and any non-members pay £7 (£3 for children).  Where ferry travel is involved, fares are increased to £7/£3 for adult/child band members and £10/£5 for adult/child non-members to help off-set the increased travel costs.

In fairness to all band members and supporters, there will typically only be one pick-up and drop-off point at the John Wright Sports Centre , East Kilbride, unless another stop can be arranged that does not require the bus to divert too far from the original planned route.

Q. What piping/drumming equipment does the band use?

Currently the band compete with the following equipment:
bulletG3/G4Pipe Corps - MacCallum Mark-II Pipe Chanters
bulletG3 Side Section - Premier HTS Snare Drums, Jim Kilpatrick KP2 Sticks
bulletG3 Mid Section - Andante Bass and Tenor Drums, TyFry Platinum Tenor Beaters
bulletG4 Side Section - Pearl FFXP Snare Drums, Jim Kilpatrick KP2 Sticks
bulletG4 Mid Section - Premier Bass and Tenor Drums, TyFry Platinum Tenor Beaters

Q. What software do I need to view the PDF files that are used on this site?

All document downloads from this site are made available in PDF format to ensure greater compatibility across a wide range of platforms - should your computer not already have PDF reader software installed, then you can download a free reader directly from Adobe .

Members Questions

Q. Help - I've not been issued or lost my intranet login details!

All band members (both playing and student) are granted access to the secure intranet site which contains additional pages and content not intended for the general public.  Should any member require a note of the login details required to access the EKPB intranet, then please speak to Fraser at any band practice.

Q. Help - I'm not able to view the members' availability matrix!

The members' availability matrix requires Microsoft Excel and if you are having trouble viewing this file, then the chances are you don't have this software installed.  Microsoft makes freely available a viewer which will allow you to access the availability matrix - the latest version of the Excel Viewer may be downloaded directly from Microsoft .

Please remember that you are unable to edit this file directly - changes to your availability for band engagements should be fed to Fraser who will update and re-publish the matrix. Members should periodically check the availability matrix to ensure that their details are kept accurate.
